Valentines for Soldiers, Recycling Award On SVUSD Meeting Agenda

The district's governing board will convene for the first time in 2012.

An initiative to reach out to members of the U.S. military on Valentine's Day is on the agenda for the Saddleback Valley School District’s school board meeting Tuesday night.

The outreach project, "Valentines for Soldiers," would encourage students, teachers, staff and community members to write a letter or craft a small Valentine to send to men and women in the Armed Forces for Valentine's Day as a "special way to let them know they are respected, valued and appreciated."

The Saddleback Valley Parent Teacher Council is the group proposing the project.

Also at the meeting, a group of special education students from Laguna Hills High School will be honored for their commitment to recycling.

Their efforts to collect and recycle every can and bottle at the 2,000-student campus—as well as a “Recycle Style” video they created—earned them the first ever Recycling Champion Award from rePLANET, which operates more than 400 recycling centers statewide.

They won a $500 Visa gift card last November in the contest, which asked high school students to submit one to three-minute videos showing off their recycling style.

Matt Millhiser, rePLANET’s marketing director, called the students “an inspiration to us all” when the company presented the students with their award on America Recycles Day, Nov. 15.
