Girls' Basketball Regionals: El Toro Loses, Laguna Hills Wins

The Chargers are beaten by perennial power Brea Olinda, while Laguna Hills takes another step toward winning its first state title since 1997.

Alyson Doherty scored 17 points and was a force on defense, but she was unable to lift El Toro past second-seeded Brea Olinda in the second round of the Southern California Regional Championships for Division I girls.

The Ladycats, playing in their home gym, scored a 65-42 victory over El Toro.

The Chargers (27-4) hung tough for awhile against the team ranked No. 7 in the state and No. 23 in the nation. They trailed by three after one quarter, and 31-22 at halftime, but the third quarter all but decided the outcome.

Brea outscored El Toro, 22-11, in the eight-minute span and the outcome was all but determined.

Doherty was the only Charger to score in double figures. Keitra Wallace scored 20 for Brea, and Anna Kim added 15.

Brea will play third-seeded Long Beach Poly in the next round.

Laguna Hills 53, West Torrance 44: The Hawks (24-8) held West Torrance to just two points in the second quarter and built a 22-10 halftime lead, then held on over the final 16 minutes. West (26-7) pulled within four points in the fourth quarter.

Laguna Hills got 21 points from Maddy Ziering-Smith, and 16 points and 10 rebmounds from Celia Marfone.

The second-seeded Hawks will play host to third-seeded Mission Hills Alemany in the regional semifinals in a rematch of their Southern Section 3A championship game.

Laguna Hills is trying to win its first state title since 1997.
