Southern Section Releases Spring Sports Rankings of April 4

The CIF Southern Section office released its weekly spring preseason coaches' rankings for baseball, softball, boys volleyball and boys tennis on Monday.

Mission Viejo (8-3) fell out of the Division 2 baseball rankings after a 1-0 loss to Aliso Niguel and since then the Diablos have beaten Laguna Hills, 7-0; San Juan Hills, 7-4; Canyon Springs, 8-1, and Greeley West (Colo.), 17-10); however, the Diablos have failed to return to the top 10. They didn't even get a mention among the "others."

As fate would have it, Mission Viejo will play Santa Barbara, the top-ranked team in Division 2 on Tuesday at Amerige Park in Fullerton, beginning at 4:30 p.m., in an Anaheim Lions Tournament game. It's a wonderful opportunity for the Diablos to make coaches sit up and take notice.

And I'm going to assume it's only because the Division 1 coaches failed to vote this week that El Toro has not cracked the top 10 poll. Can't think of any other logical reason.

Not much movement elsewhere, except that both Dana Hills and Mission Viejo jumped into the "others" category in Division 1 boys volleyball, and Corona del Mar, thanks to its Pacific Coast League victory over Woodbridge moved up to No. 2 from No. 5 in the Division 1 boys tennis rankings. Though the Sea Kings lost to No. 1 University, 13-5, on Thursday, the PCL rivals will meet again April 26 at 3:15 p.m. at University High.
