Sports Shorts: Durham Leads El Toro to Cross-Country Victory

His second-place finish, plus strong showing by teammates, helps Chargers' seniors win Laguna Hills Invitational title. El Toro's water polo team opens with dominating win, and school is seeking a wrestling coach.

Patch couldn't get out to Laguna Hills High on Saturday for the area's first cross-country meet of the season, but you can find the results on this ESPN/Rise link.

El Toro's senior boys team won the Division 1 title behind a second-place finish by Kevin Durham, who completed the three-mile course in 15:05.57, and good runs by Forrest Parkinen (13th in 16:03.71), Brian Tressler (14th in 16:04.92), Bryan Pierce (17th in 16:10.60), Ryan Acosta (24th in 16:32.70) and Jon Dodd (26th in 16:38.37. The senior girls, led by Makena Lidie (13th in 19:29.38) and Megan Callender (14th in 19:44.58), finished sixth.

Taylor Romine won the junior girls race, completing the three-mile course in 18:51.27, more than 17 seconds ahead of the next-fastest runner, and Juan Gonzalez won the junior boys race in 15:11.92 to help the Chargers finish third.

What's next? The 31st annual Cross-Country Classic, co-hosted by Woodbridge, Estancia and Costa Mesa highs, begins Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. at Estancia High in Costa Mesa.

El Toro Water Polo Team Headed North, Eventually

The Chargers' boys water polo team, which reached the CIF Southern Section Division 1 finals last season and is ranked No. 2 in the D1 coaches' polll, will lead five teams from Orange County into the North-South Challenge, Oct. 21-22, in Atherton, located between Palo Alto and Redwood City in Northern California.

Joining El Toro on its trip north will be defending Division 1 champion Mater Dei, D3 champion Laguna Beach, D1 semifinalist Loyola, D1 quarterfinalist Los Alamitos, Villa Park, Agoura and Carlsbad.

The Chargers, guided by veteran coach Don Stoll, opened their season Wednesday with a 22-7 victory over Esperanza at El Toro High. Eric Silcock led the way with five goals, while Zach Nelson had four and Logan Chappell and Joey Fuentes each added three.

The Chargers open South Coast League play on Sept. 20, with a 3:15 p.m. match at Mission Viejo. They conclude next week in the three-day South Coast, beginning Thursday at Newport Harbor High.
