Head's Up Thru Nov. 10: Worthwhile Events This Week

A look at local activities and opportunities that could be of interest to Lake Forest-area residents.

By Martin Henderson

A look at what's going down and coming up for Lake Forest and residents of the surrounding area.

• Want to save your kids' teeth? Take their Halloween candy today to Eli Orthodontics and receive $1 per pound (up to 10 pounds). All the candy that's collected will be donated to the Orange County Food Bank. Click here for more details

• Are you interested in sending our child to private school but will need financial aid to do so? If you don't want to just call the target school, you can attend a seminar tonight, 7-8:30 p.m., at the Hilton Anaheim, to learn how the financial aid process works. Click here for more details

• Today is the last day to RSVP for the Thursday, 5 p.m., grand opening of Park Terrace's Connections memory care neighborhood for seniors. There will be a ribbon cutting, auction and food and beverage. Click here for more details.

• The short-handed City Council meets on Tuesday, 7 p.m., at City Hall. Among the items to be discussed is consideration of an ordinance prohibiting the feeding of wildlife in public places—basically, don't feed the ducks and geese at Village Pond Park. If you feel strongly one way or the other about the subject, you'll want to voice your opinion at this meeting. Other items: Consideration of banning the use of electronic devices during council meetings, and refining the application process for appointment to city council to fill the seat vacated last month by Peter Herzog's resignation.

• Saddleback Valley Toastmasters will meet Tuesday night at Carrows in Laguna Hills. Click here for more details

• A health fair Wednesday at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills can answer questions about reducing your cancer risk, and you'll learn how to cook some dishes that help you eat healthy. Click here for more details.

• The Lake Forest Little League will conduct its second document check Thursday, 6 p.m., at Forest Lanes. First, you'll need to sign up for Little League. Click here for more details

• The fifth annual Performance Breakthrough Conference is presented Thursday, 6:30 p.m., by South County Chapter of the BYU Management Society, along with many non-LDS civic and community groups. Free workshops include High-Performance Success Habits, Leveraging LinkedIn, the Art of Persuasion, and Building Your Personal Brand. There is also a keynote speech by Mark Hobbins, CEO of Family IQ. Registration is 6 p.m Click here for more details

• Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famer Buddy Guy will perform Thursday at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano and he'll be followed Friday by Queensryche. Tickets are $75 for the guitar master, $39.50 for the metal band.

• The 2013 high school football season will end for local teams on Friday. Neither El Toro nor Trabuco Hills will qualify for the Southern Section Pac-5 playoffs, but that doesn't mean they can't go out with a bang. El Toro plays its second game in its new stadium and could really shake up the playoff pairings if it could upset Mission Viejo, the No. 1 team in Orange County and the No. 2 team in the division. Trabuco Hills has an easier time; the Mustangs, who have lost four of their last five—after winning their first four games of the season—play host to San Clemente.

• MOMS Club of Foothill Ranch plays host to its annual holiday boutique at the Foothill Ranch Community Room at the Foothill Ranch Library. The event is Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Click here for more details.

• It's out of the way, but it's also something everyone should do at least once in their lives: Attend an NHRA National drag racing event. The season-ending event at Pomona Raceway on the L.A. County Fairgrounds, the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, has qualifying Thursday through Saturday (which will have two rounds of qualifying) with the race Sunday. John Force of Yorba Linda, a self-described "64-year-old truck driver," has already won his 16th Funny Car championship, but Top Fuel dragster is still up for grabs. Feel the ground shake as cars drag race at more than 300 mph. A word to the wise: Bring ear plugs.
